The site has both a public directory of add-ons and a developer area with tools for uploading and maintaining add-on submissions. The site is primarily built on PHP, MySQL, CakePHP, and gettext to support its availability in over 30 languages. It has about 6 million daily pageviews of the site alone, not including the hundreds of millions of daily hits to backend services that power parts of Firefox. My role: For over 2 years, I was responsible for the planning, development, and maintenance of the Developer Tools area, as well as the Editor, Localizer, and Admin tools. This included two large revamps of the Developer Tools area, the last of which was very recent . I also helped with a number of bugs and features of the end-user facing public pages. The Developer Tools area, where most of my time was spent, includes a comprehensive Statistics Dashboard , for which I built both the back-end and front-end. The back-end is a set of scripts that count add-on downloads and update pings and organize the data. The front-end uses an SVG/Canvas graphing library called Timeplot, which I modified for our needs. The rest of the dashboard uses a variety of dropdown selector widgets I created to interact with the graph. Our choice of this technology over Adobe Flash was part of Mozilla's mission of promoting the Open Web. Rock Your Firefox Mozilla / Facebook Application Rock Your Firefox is Mozilla's only Facebook application and adds a social element to the use of browser add-ons. Users can search and browse for add-ons, view details of an add-on, and install them from the application. Add-ons can be marked as a "favorite", which will let your Facebook friends know you like that add-on. Through a newsfeed-like interface, the application also provides recomendations for add-ons you might like based on your friends' favorites. My role: The weekend after Facebook Platform launched, I started playing around with it by creating a test application. My test application was a prototype of what later became Rock Your Firefox. After showing my creation to a few people at work on Monday, it was adopted as an official project and I began adding features and integrating it with Facebook's look and feel at the time. I worked with the marketing team to develop branding and copy for the application's launch, and with the Server Operations team to improve performance, load test the application, and deploy it on a separate cluster to ensure a smooth launch.
